I typically post a job/internship lead on Fridays, but today, I am sharing with all of you a MUST read if you want to break into this industry. Sisters Courtney and Britt Dunlop have teamed up to write an amazing guide on how to break into the beauty industry…
"Every day you’re faced with potentially getting fired," my mom sympathetically said to me the other day. I am among the 5% of models that are fortunate to work as fit models, but this career can be difficult to maintain, My mother has overcome incredible obstacles to provide for my sister and I (both NY implants via Missouri) and because of this, I am always humbled when she listens to my daily accounts of trials and tribulations. See, no matter how valued a brand sees its fit model, all it takes is a new design director (or creative director, etc) to jeopardize a model’s position. That is why I strive to be the best, most consistent, punctual fit model- the model my mom has believed in since my 1st booking at age 12. So, even though the stress of my career is often emotionally taxing, I continue to brave each day with the encouragement from my mom. Unlike the incessant remarks from my clients, my mother will never see me as too tall, too short, too thin, too heavy, too brunette, too "All-American" or too "edgy." She sees her daughter that will never disappoint, which is a role from which I can never be fired. (Sisters Brit and Courtney Dunlop, executive editor of YouBeauty, recently published their first book, which was dedicated to their mom. For more visit BreakIntoBeauty)

I bruise like a peach. Whether I bump into a door handle or get in the middle of two dogs roughhousing, I am pretty much always covered in bruises. One of New York’s top plastic surgeons “prescribed” me Arnica oral pellets and topical cream to help with these unsightly marks. She also strongly advises her patients to take Arnica 5 days before any procedure in order to minimize bruising. In my case, I just carry the cream around with me and apply liberally as needed… which is pretty much all day long.
September is the fashion industry’s new year. Between fashion week and magazines’ September issues, we are all ready for a fresh start in this season’s finest. Do you have a resolution? My fashion resolution is to wear all the pieces I’ve deemed “special.” You know the ones. They sit in your closet mocking you- that fabulous Helmut Lang skirt (or, ahem, 3) that is just waiting for the perfect night on the town. Or maybe it’s a pair of glittered Louboutin booties crying for you to show them a good time. This fashion new year, I’m rocking them all. Whether it be sequined Iro jeans or Jill Stuart butter soft tees, I’m not going to wait for the “perfect” occasion to wear them. I will make my own reasons to dress in my fantastic pieces. Helmut to the nail salon; Marc to a dive bar. No more excuses! It’s time we all break boundaries and embrace our beautiful clothes. If so, I suspect it will be glorious. Happy New Year!
